On September 14–15, 2025, residents in Albuquerque and nearby New Mexico towns reported a glowing white orb hovering at high altitude. NASA has since confirmed the object was a Jet Propulsion Laboratory research balloon launched from Fort Sumner.
View In AppResidents across Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Edgewood spotted a glowing white orb hovering steadily in the evening skies on September 14, 2025. Witnesses described the object as unusually bright, sometimes translucent, and shifting in color from white to pink to orange as the night went on. Videos and photos circulated quickly, sparking debate about whether it might be a weather balloon, comet, or something more unusual.
NASA later confirmed the object was, in fact, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory high-altitude research balloon. The balloon, launched from Fort Sumner on September 14 at 2:11 p.m., is designed to measure atmospheric composition and study long-term changes in trace gases.
While the confirmation resolved the mystery for many, the sighting once again highlighted New Mexico’s unique place in skywatching culture. The state has a long history of aerial phenomena, and even identified objects like this balloon can inspire fascination, curiosity, and spirited discussion among residents.
